SPECTOR developed an overall master plan to refurbish all six of the existing schools. The first step was to reorganize and upgrade the elementary schools. Housing grades 3 through 5, SPECTOR proposed using the Powell’s Lane and Drexel Avenue Elementary Schools for grades 1 through 5 and adding twenty new classrooms, multi-purpose rooms, cafeterias as well as new Library and Media Centers. Park Avenue 1st and 2nd grades were converted to a full day kindergarten and half-day Pre-kindergarten facility. Dryden Elementary School functions as the new administration building with a Pre-K and Kindergarten program.
In addition, Westbury Middle School received new classrooms, new cafeteria/kitchen space, gymnasium/locker rooms and computer-equipped library/media center. Westbury High School enjoys all the above plus a state-of-the-art renovation of its swimming pool, formerly a ‘crown jewel’ of the district, shut down for 20 years until the renovation. The Olympic size pool was completely gutted and rebuilt with a modern filtration and temperature/humidity control system resulting in a 99.9% reduction of microbial growth. State of the art lighting, slip-proof tile decking and handicap access, bleachers for cheering spectators are once again part of this disadvantaged community where the pool was once the hub of student activity for teen students.
